Language and cultural diversity
Western Sydney has one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Australia. This presents significant additional challenges when considering how best to respond to the health literacy needs in our diverse community. Almost 50% of our population have a language other than English as their first language. Consideration needs to be given to ways in which written material and verbal communication can be adapted appropriately. Similarly, there is great cultural diversity in our communities that has a practical impact on the health service preferences and choices expressed by our community. Preparing written materials and managing verbal communication in ways that reflect this diversity will ensure that all our communities benefit equally from our health system.
